Panhandle woman gets 10 years for hubby's honeymoon drug death

SHALIMAR -- A bride has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the honeymoon death of her husband, who died after she shared illegal drugs him. The woman's prior fiance died the same way a day before they were to be wed.

Tracy Ann Biggart, 31, of Niceville, received the sentence Tuesday as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. She could have gotten up to 15 years under sentencing guidelines. She had pleaded no contest in December to third-degree murder and delivery and possession of a controlled substance.

Circuit Judge G. Robert Barron also will recommend that the woman, whose maiden name is Stauffer, go to a prison where she can be treated for her drug addiction in accord with the plea deal.

``I love my husband very much and I wouldn't have done anything to hurt him,'' she said at sentencing. ``I've made some bad choices in my life.''

David Joseph Biggart Jr. died last February at a Niceville hotel where the newlyweds were staying. Both had taken methadone and passed out. Tracy Biggart awoke the next day to find her husband unconscious on the floor.

Assistant Public Defender Scott Tatum asked Barron to suspend his client's sentence if she successfully completed drug rehabilitation. Assistant State Attorney Bobby Elmore argued against that idea by noting the fiance's death and her inability to kick her habit after going through four earlier programs.

Elmore said the fiance died after taking heroin with Biggart in West Palm Beach. That death was classified as an accident and no criminal charges were filed.

After the Niceville death, Tracy Biggart fled the state. She was arrested in Chalmette, La., more than three months later.
